2017 MAHINDRA BOLERO POWER+ REVIEW
by Riju Ganguly
Mahindra may not have too successful in the sub 4 meter SUV segment, the Quanto being the biggest example however they have not taken a step back. Their last few launched in the same segment includes the TUV300, Nuvosport and the KUV 100 definitely proved the fact that that they learn from their mistakes quickly and try to provide the best possible product to the adventure enthusiast as well as the Utility vehicle lovers of the Country.
POWERTRAIN
The Bolero Power+ SUV gets a completely new mHawkD70 engine which belongs to the family of the mHawk engine and powers the TUV300 as well. This diesel unit has been tuned to produce about 70 bhp of peak power at 3,600 rpm and 195 Nm of peak torque between 1,400-2,200 rpm. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual gearbox which sends power to the rear wheels. This engine is almost 13 percent more powerful than the regular Bolero.
The new engine also gets Mahindra’s Micro Hybrid system which is basically the start/stop system. The new system makes the Bolero Power+ SUV almost 5 percent more fuel efficient than the existing Bolero. The Bolero Power+ SUV promises to return an ARAI certified fuel efficiency of around 16.5 kmpl.
The reason behind choosing the 1.5 Litre unit over the original 2.5 Litre diesel unit which powers the standard Mahindra Bolero is that these small cars gets the advantage of excise duty benefits because they falls under the small car category.
COMPETITION
Although this car will be priced much lower than the other Mahindra compact utility vehicles it will however compete directly against the TUV300 because that is the only car in this range to actually offer a third row jump seats.
Keeping in mind the fact that the upcoming Mahindra Bolero is actually meant for the rural and commercial market the Bolero has few rivals here. However it will face some serious competition from the Mahindra TUV300. The TUV300 uses the same 1.5 Litre three cylinder M-hawk diesel unit which produces about 84 Bhp of peak power and a clad leading 230 Nm of torque. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission while there is also an option of first-in-class ‘autoSHIFT’ technology (Automated Manual Transmission) as well which sends power to the front wheels. In terms of comfort and convenience surely the TUV300 tops the list.
There is absolutely no doubt in the fact that the Bolero is more popular in the rural markets of the country and the spacious interior, powerful diesel engine with loads of torque available on demand is also the main selling point for this SUV.
The Bolero Power+ SUV too carries the same DNA of its bigger sibling and although it may not provide spacious interior but surely the powerful engine and aggressive pricing as well as the ‘Bolero’ sticker itself surely will work wonders for this newly launched SUV.
